Katy and David were married on a beautiful fall day at New Kent Winery in New Kent Virginia.  We started at Katy’s Grandparent’s home, where she got ready with her Bridesmaids.  This home is very special to Katy and I loved that she wanted to take some photos with her Grandpa’s tractor!  After she was all set, we headed to the Winery, where David and his Groomsmen were getting ready.  Katy and David had opted for a first look (which I LOVE) so we went out to the vineyards and they got to see one another for the first time that day.  They are such a great couple…and David is a first class cuddler!!  The Ceremony was quick but super sweet and then everyone had a blast dancing the rest of the night!  Thanks you two for choosing us to document this wonderful day!!  We had such a fun time hanging out with you all!!

Can I tell you a little something about character?!  I don’t know if you have ever seen a Cross Country meet…but these things are grueling!  Honestly, I can endure a fair amount of pain…even enjoy it…but what these kids put themselves through on a daily basis is really a remarkable thing!

Take my Son, for example.  Truman has been suffering from a knee affliction all season.  His legs have grown faster than his knees and now he needs to grow to catch up.  Unfortunately this causes him a lot of pain when he does the thing he loves best…running.

Last week alone, he ran 23 miles during practice, and he is 12, people!!  12!!!  But he felt GREAT and was very excited for the meet!  When they sounded the airhorn, he took off like a shot! Morgan and I raced to about the mile and a half marker to cheer for our favorite runner!  When he crested the hill, in the top 1/3 of the pack…I could tell something wasn’t right.  He was shaking his head, and had his pain face on.  He pulled over and told me his knees were killing him…but he didn’t want to not finish the race.  He then saw a few kids on his team, fell in step with them and kept going…with a limping gait.

Morgan and I waited there, because on the third mile, they had to pass that spot, too.  We waited and waited and almost every kid in the race passed us.  I was sure he had pulled out…when out of the woods, I saw this tiny figure limping along.  It was Truman.  He was walking…but still in the race.  When he got to us, he looked so sad and defeated.  He had taken off his number and looked ready to quit.  We called to him, we cheered.  We told him to hold his head high.  To be proud of himself for not giving up and to put that number back on…and finish that race.  And you know what…that is exactly what he did!  And once he got a safe distance away from us, Morgan and I cried tears!  We were so proud of that little Man for not giving up!

This Sunday, I will be competing in the Gangs of the Mid Atlantic Crossfit competition.  I know there will be times that I will want to quit…but I will think of Truman in those times…hold my head up high and not quit!

Thank you Truman!!  You are an inspiration and I am so proud of you!!

  • David Tucker - Dear Leah; You’ve got a great kid (must be he has pretty good parents!). As I long ago high school cross country runner (I graduated with your dad), I can empathize with Truman’s frustration and pain – and his commitment to see the race through to the end. Give him a hug, a pat on the back, and a fist bump from an old codger that finds him inspiring.

    Cheers, dtReplyCancel

    • Leigh - Thank you so much for your words David!! What a truly tough an inspiring sport! XOXO!ReplyCancel

  • jamie vendetti - Wow, this brought tears to my eyes as my son is also a cross country runner. He is in his first year of high school and had never ran before. His first race he came in last and most of the subsequent races, he finished near the very bottom. His spirit didn’t break, he finished each race with a smile because he was faster than the last race. Over the course of the season he has taught me a lot too! Thanks for sharing your precious Truman!!!! Way to go Truman!!!!!ReplyCancel

    • Leigh - Thanks Jamie! It is a hard sport to watch! These kids really punish themselves! But I am inspired by them at every meet!! Congrats to your Son for hanging in there…and getting better every race!! XOXO!ReplyCancel

Katie & Tim met the summer before their first year at UVA, in Charlottesville Virginia.  Tim was a offensive lineman from Pittsburgh Pa, and Katie was a first year equipment manager for the team.  They had caught each other’s eye on the field, but met over some watermelon at a team dinner!  Because of the nature of their jobs at the school…they really couldn’t date.  But then, Tim found out he had a condition that sadly ended his football career.  One silver lining, was that he was now free to be with Katie!

I loved hanging out with these two.  First of all Katie told me how tall Tim was…and when he got out of the car, I thought…he isn’t so big…LOL!  Well I think I might come up to his belly button…so yes, he is VERY TALL!  He is also a super sweet gentle giant, who is full of patience and loves his puppies.  Katie is one of those Women who literally has no idea how gorgeous they are.  She is super easy going and fun and I love how she throws her head back when she laughs!  Oh and their pups…Chief and Moose…super hilarious and sweet dogs!  Moose really reminded Jay and I of our old beagle, who loved to roll in stinky stuff!!  And true to beagle form, Moose found someone’s stomach contents and promptly covered himself in it!  Chief on the other hand, doesn’t like to be separated from his Mom and Dad and tried to launch himself over a brick fence at one point to find Tim.  Both Chief and Moose did and awesome job making sure they got a great Family pic with Tim and Katie and wore themselves out running through the Charlottesville gardens!  Can’t wait to see these two again next year at their wedding!!  XOXO!

I absolutely ADORE this Family!!  I have had the pleasure of photographing them several times now…including their WEDDING!!!  (See it Here)  It was so great to see them all again!!  The kiddos are starting to get so big!! I actually call this the “running” session!  When kids get to be a certain age…(Usually 2)…my photography sessions turn into a full on running session!  Trying to make little ones sit still during a session is unrealistic…and besides, I love to see their personalities shine through while they are having FUN!!   Beau was all boy at this session and loved playing in the sand, climbing the pier and running all around.  Scarlet is still totally full of sass and light and I love hanging out with her!!  Kimberly was so tan after her European cruise (Jealous!!)  And Bryan and Niki are as adorable as ever!   Thank you all so much for choosing me to be a part of your lives!  I had a BLAST!!  XOXO!

WOW!  We had the BEST time getting to know Melanie, Tyler and their beautiful German Shepherd, Cain at Windsor Castle park in Smithfield Virginia!  This couple is so FUN and we loved how easily they snuggled and laughed with one another.  We also loved hanging out with Cain…who is still mostly a puppy…and did such a great job listening during our session!  These two met when they were in the same dorm at ODU, freshman year and have been inseparable ever since.  I love how Melanie described what she loves most about Tyler…”I love how he makes me feel. He makes me a better person each and every day. I feel like I can do just about anything when I have him by my side.”  After being with these two for a bit, I agree that together they can do anything!!
